Bangalore Traffic

Steps to be taken by the government:

1) Add more roads within city. Ring roads are good, but unless more roads are added within city limits, central business district will choke. It is very sad to note that in the last 10 years, hardly 10KM of road has been added within city.

2) Widen existing roads. Consider, for example, the hosur road stretch between madiwala checkpost to lalbaugh. It gets chocked because it is not broad enough to carry a 2 lane traffic at each side of road.

3) Add shoulders and round abouts in junctions. This way, a vehicle to turn left or tight will not block the traffic following the vehicle.

4) Don't waste time and money on projects like 12KM stretch elevated expressway. (Foreigners are laughing at such projects). Instead, add fly over at each junction, and most traffic jam will be gone already.

5) Ban slow moving vehicles like tractors, bullock carts, heavilily loaded cargo vehicles. They cause too much disturbance to describe here.

6) Enforce a maximum body width for vehicles. In west, a lorry or a bus will be only a little bit wider than a car. This will make sure that more lanes can be added to existing roads and that no vehicle will block the road.

7) Come up with a 200 page booklet on road rules and regulations and make sure every one has to read and pass it before driving vehicle on roads. (Apply even to existing license holders)

8) Make sure licenses are issues strictly for merit and not for bribe.

Steps to be taken by the public

1) Be courteous to otehr drivers on the road. Give way whereever you can.

2) Don't block intersections while in a traffic jam.

3) Follow rules strictly. Lane discipline is an absoulute must.

4) Don't honk excessively. You add a lot of stress to drivers in front of you. By honking, you are reducing the life of that poor guy in front of your vehicle. (due to stress you cause)

If you have information on places to see in Bangalore, hotels, bars, pubs, finance management while at Bangalore, etc, please add information to http://TripBangalore.Com

The root cause of Bangalore traffic problems is the "disrespect to the fellow citizen". If people have little patients, most of the issues can be solve with out much problem. Bangalore has more educated drivers than any other city in India. But no one bothers about any traffic rules. I don't know how many of them red the rule book at least once.

Even if we have 10-line road we will drive 20 line traffic on that. Driving on right side of the road is not an offence. Overtaking through left side- That's usual stuff. Crossing red signal - It is for others. Driving slow on the right most track in multi line road- If you want you can overtake trough my left side.

I feel police has to impose at least a fine of Rs.1000/- for traffic rule violations. Even if Govt share 50% with the policemen (to avoid any form of corruption), it will generate huge revenue that can be used for road development. Once people get feel about the punishment things will change. Therefore, the only way to solve the traffic problems is to impose huge fine and implementing it.

SIR,
WHAT ARE THE MEANING OF ONE-WAYS IN THE CITY - DO THEY REALLY EXIST IN THE CITY, IF SO HOW ARE THE BTP IMPLEMENTING THESE RULES & REGULATIONS ? I SEE MANY RULES BEING VIOLATED BY THE ROAD USERS & MOST OF THEM BEING IGNORED, OR THE POLICE PRESENCE BEING ABSENT. ON THE OTHER HAND IF CASES ARE BEING BOOKED BY THE POLICE, HOW IS IT THAT THERE ARE MORE VIOLATORS RATHER THAN THE GUYS WHO LEARN FROM PAST MISTAKES. I RESIDE IN MALLESWARAM & THE NO. OF OFFENCES THAT I CAN SEE OR SAY WOULD BE AROUND 100 TO 150 CASES IN DAY. THE BEST CHOICE FOR THE CITY POLICE TO SEE THAT A OFFENDER IS BOOKED & ANOTHER OFFENCE NOT BOOKED WOULD BE TO INSTALL CCTV CAMERAS AT SENSITIVE PLACES & CASES BOOKED. THE PROJECT MAY CONSIDER MORE FINANCE FROM THE GOVT. BUT ON THE LONG RUN IT WILL BE BENEFICIAL TO THE BTP & THE GOVT. OR ELSE ALLOW PEOPLE LIKE US TO MONITOR THE TRAFFIC & ALLOW US THE PERMISSION TO BOOK CASES ON THE OFFENDERS, IT WILL BE BENEFICIAL TO THE BTP ON THE LONG RUN.

I like the effort but I am doubtful about its effectiveness. I am not sure how all of these suggestions are reaching the right ears, that is our Bangalore traffic department? Anyway here are some of my suggestions:
1. Bangalore Traffic Department (Police or management team) should meet regularly with common people every month to identify the most troubled area, discuss solution to improve traffic in that area. Ideally these meetings should be broken into regions e.g. Whitefield, Marathalli, Sarjapur etc.

2. I have lived for 8 years in UK, and trying to settle in Bangalore, and I have to say except traffic everything seems to be pretty good here. The traffic unfortunately is in a hopeless state! Here are some immediate things that need to change:

A) What: First thing first, people should drive in lanes, however long the queue is this habit of squeezing in every possible space makes the traffic a real stressful experience.
How: Technology can help here, but that is long shot, I think a lot of police or volunteers, temporary traffic personnel need to be employed to just manually check. They should just note down the number and report back. Spot fining is messy. I see a good revenue generation here! Also for wider lanes we can have 3 lanes, the left most lane for bus, auto, taxi and bikes. 2 Bikes can go side by side BUT they need to be in a lane.

B) What: Lot of traffic lights and/or zebra crossings are needed for people to walk across. Overhead bridges are good, but they cannot be built everywhere.
How: Again employ traffic police. When the passenger traffic light is flashing people should be able to walk across the street, and all the traffic must stop during this time. Simple really.

C) What: Bangalore needs more round abouts, not the cuts where people try to take U turns.
How: Well just build round abouts, and employ good driving habits for round abouts. Regarding this, given the volume of traffic "Give Way" system wont work in Bangalore. It ideally needs traffic lights or traffic police.

D) What: Better driving habits e.g. if someone is trying to take a right turn he/she needs to move to right hand side well before.
How: To do this, I think there should be barriers starting 100 yards from the junction. The warning signs should start some 300 yards before the junction asking cars to come into lanes. If a car does not come into the correct lane before 100yards, he will have no way to come to his desired lane. He will have to take U turn from another junction :)

3. General traffic infrastructure needs to be improved i.e. more roads, wider road etc. This cannot happen overnight. Some of the smaller roads linking two wider roads is just too small to handle all the traffic. I think these smaller roads should be one way, this may require alternate one way roads, and can create access problems for people living in those smaller roads. This is not straightforward but there can be work arounds in similar line of thought.

Best Regards and happy driving!
